How to: Fur Pom Pom

It’s that time of year- beanie weather! Everyone has that one beanie that they wear out all winter long. Want to spruce it up? Add a fur pom pom!

Lately I’ve been seeing fur pom poms everywhere. I think it’ll be a trend this winter season.

You can buy already made pom poms at the craft store, but who wants to spend $10 for something you can make cheaper? No me!

To begin, you’ll need a piece of craft fur. I got this piece at Michaels . You can also buy craft fur by the yard at Joann.

First you’ll draw a circle on the backside of the fur. I measured out a 6 inch circle. Keep in mind that your pom pom will shrink about an inch when it’s completed (due to the sewing you’ll see later in this post).

After measuring and drawing my circle I cut it out with a good pair of scissors.

Next you’ll need a sharp sewing needle and some yarn. I am using worsted weight (size #4) yarn. Choose a color that will match your beanie just in case a little bit shows through when you sew it on.

Now for sewing the pom pom. You’ll want to tie a knot at one end to secure it. Next you’ll weave back and forth all the way around the circle. Be sure to leave long tails so you have enough to sew onto the beanie.

Now that I have sewed my yarn into the fur it’s time to make the pom pom. Start by pulling your yarn end (the end that doesn’t have a knot) a little so it starts to form a ball. Before you completely scrunch it, add a bit of poly fill. The poly fill is what gives the pom pom it’s shape.

Now you’re done! All you need to do is just to sew your cute pom pom onto a beanie.

Love the beanie above? I have a pattern for it! Check it out here.
