This is the first installment of a new series I’m launching on the blog. Introducing “Sustainable Products Review”! In this series I will be trying a few new products for a month then sharing my honest thoughts and feelings on them.
One of my big goals this year is to make more sustainable swaps in my life and household. There are so many different products out there that it can be overwhelming. Just by googling “sustainable swaps” will give you so many new ideas. Each month I will select a few items to try, use them for that month and then share my feedback here on the blog. I will be limiting the number of products I try out as to not overwhelm myself, but also because the most sustainable product you can use is one you already have. The products I am testing are a replacement for something I used up or are something new I want to add to my lifestyle. All of the products I will try are not at all sponsored. These are all products I have purchased and tried myself.
In this first review I have selected three products to test out. The first two are Rhyme & Reason shampoo and conditioner and the third is Hey Humans deodorant.
Product 1 & 2: Rhyme & Reason Shampoo and Conditioner
Previously, I had been using shampoo bars and conditioner bars. While I do like what I was already using, I wanted to try something new. What drew me to these products specifically is that they are both plant-based, natural products and their packaging is 100% recyclable.
My first impression of these two products was the smell. They actually smelled really good despite not having any added fragrance like other shampoos and conditioners do. I also really liked the shape of the packaging. The rectangular shape made them fit nicely in my shower. When it came to actually using the products I became less enthusiastic about them.
My Thoughts:
Let’s start with the shampoo. I like the consistency of it. It lathered up nicely and was very similar to other bottle shampoos I’d used in the past. I was surprised how much it was like other bottle shampoos because it was plant-based and didn’t contain any parabens or sulfates. However, when it came to the conditioner I was much less impressed. The consistency was just like other bottled conditioners I’d used before but when it came to actually coating my hair it did not do the job. I felt like I had to use even more than I normally would just to get it to coat my hair. I definitely ran out of the conditioner much quicker than the shampoo. I even ran out before the month was over.
Overall, I was disappointed in this product. I really wanted to like them, but they did not work well for me. I was disappointed with how much conditioner I had to use and how quickly I ran out. I was especially disappointed because these two products costed a bit more than regular bottled shampoo and conditioner. After trying these two I will not be switching to using them. I will definitely go back to my shampoo and conditioner bars. Or I may try another bottle shampoo and conditioner in the future.
Product 3: Hey Humans Deodorant
The third product I tried out was Hey Humans deodorant. I was initially drawn to this product because of its ingredients. This deodorant is aluminum-free, paragon-free and silicon-free. I also loved that the fragrance was derived from essential oils and not chemical fragrance. Another draw to this product is that the packaging is made from paper and is recyclable! A big downside to traditional deodorants you see in stores in how much plastic is involved in their packaging and twist-up mechanisms.
My Thoughts:
I was excited to try this product because I have such sensitive skin and these products made me think my skin wouldn’t react to it. After trying it out, I was right. My skin loved this deodorant and didn’t have any reaction to it. The fragrance was great and the scent lasted all day long. My day job involves a lot of moving around and lifting and this deodorant did the job throughout my whole shift. Another plus for this product was the price. The pricing was comparable to other name brand deodorants. After using this product for the past month I still have plenty to last me though the next month too.
Overall, I was very happy with this product and will definitely be swapping to it. I love everything about it: the scent, the packaging and it does the job! This is a product I would even recommend to others who are looking for a more sustainable alternative to traditional deodorants.
