Scrappy Scrunchie

We’ve all got those scrap little balls of yarn lying around from previous projects. If you’re like me, you may have a little basket you keep all those tiny skeins in. I never want to throw away those pieces because I feel, as a sustainable maker, that I can find a use for them instead of throwing them out. Well now I’ve got my new favorite scrap yarn project. Check out the scrappy scrunchie!

This quick and easy project only takes 35 yards of yarn! I had leftover yarn from my Senescence Sweater and I was able to make a handful of scrunchies out of my leftovers. This pattern uses worsted weight yarn, but you can use any yarn that you have on hand; just adjust your hook size accordingly. For smaller yarn, you may want to size down your hook a bit so you don’t have big gaps between your stitches. For larger yarn, you can keep the same hook size or go up one. The main thing to consider when adjusting yarn weights is to ensure that you can fit your elastic inside.

Elastic? Yep! This project uses sewing elastic to ensure this scrunchie is going to hold up! I had some 1/4 inch elastic on hand that I used inside. I have made scrunchies before by using a regular old hair elastic, but I find that those can stretch out easily or even break after multiple uses. I made my original scrappy scrunchie almost 3 weeks ago and I wear it almost everyday- and it’s still holding up! “Messy bun and getting stuff done” is pretty much how I live so I needed a scrunchie that could hold up.

An important thing to me when I am purchasing something new is that it is going to last a while. I do not want to buy something, have it last a month, and then need a replacement. To me, that is not sustainable. One of my goals for this year has been making the most out of the items I use. When I am purchasing something, I want it to last me for a long time. Otherwise, I am not reducing my waste and carbon footprint.

Now here’s all that you’ll need.

  • 35 yards of worsted weight #4 yarn
  • Size H/ 5mm crochet hook
  • 8 inches of ¼ inch thick elastic
  • Sewing thread
  • Sewing needle
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Pattern:

Ch 10. Sl st to the first chain to form a ring.

Round 1- 34: Hdc in each stitch around. Do not join at the end of the row  (10).

This tube should measure approx. 14 inches.

Cut yarn and leave a long tail for sewing.

Assembly:

Step 1: Cut a piece of elastic that is 8 inches long.

Step 2: Stick the elastic inside of the tube so it sticks out at both ends.
Note: You will need to scrunch the tube up to get both of the ends of the elastic to stick out of the tube.

Step 3: Place the ends of the elastic overlapping and sew them together with thread.

Step 4: Use a yarn needle and the long tail to sew the ends of the tube together.

That’s it! You now have a scrappy scrunchie!
