Amaryllis Cardigan

The Name

Amaryllis is a beautiful red flower whose name comes from an old greek story. The story goes that these flowers grew from the blood of the nymph Amaryllis who was madly in love with a shepherd named Alteo. Supposedly the flowers are what made him fall in love with her. The flowers are now a sign of beauty and love.

The Inspiration

This design has been in the making since fall 2019. I started this project as a creative release from stressful finals. I wanted to create a super cozy cardigan that would be perfect for lounging around in and that I could dress up to wear out. It is one of the comfiest things I’ve ever worn.

The Yarn

The yarn I used for this project was Color Made Easy by Lion Brand. You can find the yarn here (through my affiliated link). It may surprise you that I used this yarn since it is an acrylic yarn. If you’ve been following me for a little while you know that I try to use natural and plant-based fibers as an alternative to acrylic. Acrylic is made of plastics that can take a long time to be broken down and can’t be recycled. That being said, this yarn is 100% acrylic. I began this project back in 2019 before I made the switch to alternatives.

If you are looking for an alternative to acrylics for this project here are some more sustainable alternatives.

Materials

The amount of yarn needed will vary depending on the size you are making and the length. As you read through the pattern you’ll see that the pattern is customizable for the length you want it to be. Yardage for my testers ranged from 1100-2300 yards; depending on length.

Testers

One of my favorite part of the design process is seeing the combinations my testers come up with. Check out the gallery to get some inspiration.
